CHAPTER TWENTY
Maggie picked at her chicken salad croissant, pulling out any large pieces of celery and shoving them to the side. The late lunch offered a few minutes of peace since most of the deliâs customers had long since returned to work. âDoesnât sound like you played nice.â
âHe started it,â Jeremy said.
âI swear, youâre justââ
He laughed. âI said that to get you going. Howâd your meeting with Bailey go?â
âOkay, I guess. The Portland office is interviewing employees and customers at that coffeehouse today. Theyâre supposed to call me if anything turns up. No security cameras in the restaurant or parking lot, though, so no help there.â
âWhatâs your plan? Gonna hang out in DC until something else breaks?â
She arched her eyebrows and frowned. âDonât see as Iâve got much choice. Could go back to Portland, but Talbotâs long gone from there. Nothing in Pleasant View to see. Chicagoâs our best bet, but thatâs a roll of the dice. Might as well stay close to home until we get something solid.â
Good. âHowâs Rebecca?â
âOh. Glad you asked. I almost forgot.â She reached into her purse and handed him a folded sheet of green construction paper. âAnother one to add to your zoo collection.â
A light tingling sensation filled his chest as he opened the rough paper. A grayish blob with four thick legs filled most of the pageâs bottom area. Red dots speckled the animalâs feet, and its huge, open mouth revealed monstrous teeth. In the background, a blue band flowed from side to side under a bright yellow sun. âHippo, right? Sheâs getting a lot better.â
âRight. Sheâs got my artistic ability, sadly. I think we can rule out a career as a sketch artist. But yeah, thatâs a hippo.â
He pointed at the feet. âThese red dots are â¦?â
She rolled her eyes. âNail polish. She thought the hippo needed to look nicer.â
âLove it, Maggie. This one goes to the top of the refrigerator. Tell her I said thanks.â
âTell her yourself. I told Mom youâd be calling after Rebecca gets home from school.â
He dabbed a French fry in ketchup. âFirst grade. Three toughest years of my life.â
âThat explains a lot. Figure out what your next move is?â
âYeah. Cronfeld made a comment that got me thinking. Said his men are loyal to him. Reminded me of something. Iâve got to make a few phone calls. Track down whatever information I can. But if it leads whereââ
Maggieâs phone vibrated, and she held up her index finger as she answered the call. âHold on a sec. Agent Keeley. Okay ⦠okay. Got a name? Kathryn Stanton ⦠with a K? Okay ⦠how long? Four days? Could be a coincidence. You check with family? Uh-huh ⦠okay ⦠someone on the way to her ⦠why not? How long before you get the warrant? Uh-uh ⦠too long. Kick in the door if you have to. She could be in danger ⦠okay. Let me know as soon as you do. Good work.â
âWhatâs going on?â Jeremy asked.
She stood and put on her coat.
